Bi-Annual Fashion and Beauty Trend Report

Autumn / Winter Trends in Australia and New Zealand

The Afterpay Bi-Annual Global

Fashion & Beauty Trend Report

Welcome to the Australia & New Zealand section of the Global Trend Report, where we take a closer look at what customers are shopping for this Autumn / Winter.

Who is the Australian / New Zealand Afterpay Customer?

At 3.4 million strong, Australians and Kiwis are the most active shoppers within Afterpay’s global audience, with the earliest customer cohorts now transacting ~29 times a year.

Which cities are they shopping from?

Melbourne
Sydney
Brisbane
Perth
Adelaide

Auckland
Christchurch
Wellington

How are they shopping?

Their average age is mid-thirties (36 years in AU and 35 in NZ to be exact), they prefer to shop around lunchtime, and they have an affinity for loungewear.

Most surprising perhaps, is that only 80% shop from a mobile device (compared to 85% in the US and 93% in the UK), and when Aussies shop for fashion accessories they buy more at checkout, almost seven items on average (compared to three items in the US and in the UK). Kiwis love their beauty products, shopping four items on average.

What are they buying?

Casual-fashion is still present, but we’re starting to see the return of more transitional and easy to style looks. Bodysuits and rompers are key fashion items, while jeggings are still high on consumers lists. Many are updating their undergarments with nightgowns and underwear ranking high. On the beauty side, skincare is much more prevalent than makeup. Rollerballs tools, sunscreen and CC creams as well as oils are ranking high.

What’s hot for autumn?

While the autumn and winter seasons are usually a time for subtle stylings, this year ANZ shoppers are embracing their playfulness.

As established warm, velvety colours are beginning to seep into our A/W wardrobes, vibrant tones, such as mint, are also being favourited to stand-out from the moody autumnal feel.

Flirty fabrics, such as pointelle, are en vogue with shoppers choosing textural takes, while the items making this year’s top list are fun nods to classic eras, from 90s-inspired print t-shirts and throwing it right back to the roaring 20s with undergarments inspired by the era.

Themes of self-care are also coming through, from hair oil to sunscreen, with shoppers choosing to stay protected throughout the winter.

Classic footwear items (think: white trainers or ankle boots) are still on trend, but a surprising entry into Afterpay’s ‘what’s hot’ list are roller skates. ANZ shoppers are embracing their fun and adventurous side by trying something new.

The Top 3 Fabrics

As the cooler months appear, texture over print is trending and we’re seeing textural fabrics and delicate knits slide into our wardrobes.

According to Afterpay’s consumer fashion psychologist, Shakaila Forbes Bell, humans have strong emotional reactions towards physical sensations, and as we’re moving out the home and into a new chapter, everyone still wants that cosy feeling.

Top Colors

Colours that represent and celebrate skin tone in chocolate, camel and nude are becoming increasingly popular IRL and on Instagram. While deep olives, jade and mint are also trending and are associated with nature, serenity and being grounded. Lilac blew up when Oprah wore it in her interview with Meghan and Harry, and we predict we will continue to see hints of this hue as we move into the cooler months.

While black and grey shaded fashion are A/W staples across the globe, green is having a moment in NZ and is actually the world’s favourite colour. Associated with nature, serenity and being grounded, our Kiwi friends are reflecting their vast landscape this A/W.

The Hottest Brands & Retailers

Unsurprisingly, American’s have been doubling down on fitness, beauty and casual fashion. Below we dive in the top brands in the US.

As we’re starting to celebrate big events like weddings again, Aussies are taking this opportunity to get frocked up in gorgeous gowns. We still like to keep it casual and comfortable though, with a henley or t-shirt under overalls being the perfect weekend outfit as we head out and about in the winter sun. And although we’re heading into the cooler months, as Hailey Bieber has reminded us all, it’s important to continue wearing sunscreen to protect our skin.

Style By City

After what seemed like a never-ending 2020 of at-home workouts and comfortable (on the couch) clothing, across ANZ we’re now seeing the resurgence of more tailored silhouettes and the rise of playful, fun accessories.

While eyewear in particular is a stylish way to add a unique touch to an outfit and show quirky, creative expression in a look, we’re also seeing the pop of beads, earrings, and rings as people add those individual little touches that really make them feel special.

The Bag Update

The carryall and duffle were our region’s most popular bags, and no wonder with all the fabulous weekend trips we’re taking to explore within the bounds of our own beautiful shores.

As we get back to our social lives and take advantage of any excuse to get out and celebrate with loved ones, we’re also seeing smaller, more delicate event bags pop up like the baguette and wristlet.

The Accessories Update

Who would have thought Bernie Sanders would be a fashion icon? But as we’re heading into winter, mittens are getting snapped up as they make their way into the top five trending accessories!

Across ANZ, sun protection isn’t stopping in autumn with bucket hats continuing to be a favourite accessory for both Aussies and Kiwis.
